We are small on purpose. It is the only way to hold a standard on the things nobody photographs.
How it started
A robe that took a year to get right
Darkua Atelier started with a single garment nobody was making — a full-length satin robe with lace that lay flat instead of rippling at the corners. It sounds like a small thing. It took most of a year, and it is still the reason people find us.
The fix, when we found it, was unglamorous: mitre the lace at every corner by hand rather than easing it around the curve. It adds the better part of a day to each robe. We have never worked out how to do it faster and have stopped trying.
Everything since has followed from that. A short list of shapes, cloth chosen before the pattern, and a workshop small enough that the person who cut your garment can be asked about it.
How we work
Four things we don't compromise on
- One workshop
- Everything is cut, sewn, pressed and packed in the same building. Nothing is subcontracted, which means when something is wrong there is exactly one place to fix it.
- Cloth first
- We choose the cloth before the shape. Most of what we make exists because a particular weave arrived and asked to be something.
- Graded, not scaled
- Sizes XS to 3XL are each drafted properly rather than multiplied up from a middle size. It takes longer and it is the only way the larger sizes actually fit.
- Made to be worn out
- We test everything through forty washes before it goes on sale. If a print fades or a seam gives, it does not ship.
